BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- After playing the film festival circuit, the homegrown documentary Eating Alabama will make its TV debut at 8 p.m. Sunday on Alabama Public Television stations statewide.
Directed by Tuscaloosa filmmaker Andrew Grace, the film follows Grace and his wife, Rashmi, and two of their friends on their year-long quest to eat only foods grown or raised in Alabama. Sometimes, that meant growing their own.
They not only learned a few lessons in self-sufficiency, but also how much modern agriculture has changed the family farm their grandparents knew.
The truth is, we sort of figured out how to eat locally, Grace said in an interview with The Birmingham News prior to last months Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. But the problem was, the farmers that we encountered were having such a hard time making a living that we realized this story was actually a lot different, and a lot more complicated.
So the film kind of takes a turn in the middle of the movie and starts exploring the lives of the farmers more.
