Barges Move Upriver To Transport Drinking Water From Above Salt Intrusion To Plaquemines Parish

Barges are moving up river, above a saltwater intrusion on the Mississippi River, to begin retrieving water to transport to the lower end of Plaquemines Parish.

Parish President Billy Nungesser is asking residents to conserve water. Nungesser declared a state of emergency Wednesday due to the saltwater intrusion on the river.

A salt wedge is moving up the Mississippi River and threatening the parish's drinking water supply. The wedge is currently moving north because of low levels in the Mississippi River and lack of rain in the upper regions of the U.S.
