Winter heat wave sends Peruvians flocking to beach

LIMA, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Peruvians are surfing, fishing and ditching winter clothes to flock to beaches in Lima as a heat wave continues to upend winter in South America.

"The sun is out constantly, it's been almost a week with strong sunshine, it feels more like summer," said Sergio Rodriguez, a surf instructor in Lima. "It has given us more work, people want to surf."

Rolando Quisca, a local fisherman, also said the heat wave had benefited him, citing an unusual amount of albacore, a fish that lives in warmer waters.

"It's unusual because it's been years and years since we've seen this amount of albacore," Quisca said.

I am reminded of a news story regarding a tsunami. First, the ocean withdrew! The people had never seen anything like it! They walked out onto what had been the ocean bottom in amazement!

Then the water came back…

Lima is 12 degrees south of the equator. The avg. high temps in Lima swing between 82 in the summer and 72 in the `dead of winter` (WTF?)

Lima is nowhere near the `southern tip of the Americas` (WTF?)

Globally, July was the hottest month ever recorded, while the beginning of August has brought shockingly high temperatures to the southern tip of the Americas at a time when the region is usually in the dead of winter.

It neither says that it should be cold in Peru in Winter nor that Peru is at the southern tip of the continent.

Regardless, this map of current ocean surface temperatures may help to explain why Peru is hotter than usual for this time of year:

I mean do they know Peru is in the tropics? Too funny. It will be interesting to see how this El Niño plays out though, for sure.

"We have recorded a temperature of 27.6 Celsius (82F) on a winter day," said Yuri Escajadillo, a weather forecaster for Peru's National Meteorological and Hydrology Service, Senamhi.

"You don't get this in winter, this is record-breaking and has exceeded all historical values for this season."

Escajadillo said part of the reason for the dramatic temperature spike was warm water along Peru's coasts brought on by the El Nino weather phenomenon.

He said the water off the coast of Lima should be 16-17 Celsius (61-63 Fahrenheit) but was currently 20-21 Celsius (68-70).

What to Wear in Peru

Pack for the Weather
  • On the coast in winter (June, July, August and September) it can be cool. At the same time in the mountains it can be warm and sunny during the day but very cold at night. Dressing in layers will help you cope with the temperature changes.

  • In December, January, February, March and April you will experience heavy rain in the mountains and jungle so a waterproof raincoat is a must. The opposite is true on the coast.

  • We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂 Download for iPad/iPhone or Android

August Fashion: What To Wear In Peru During Your Visit
Last updated Jun 24, 2023

Are you planning a trip to Peru in August and wondering what to wear? Well, you're in the right place! With its diverse landscapes and varying climates, Peru can present some tricky wardrobe decisions. In August, the country experiences a mix of weather conditions, from chilly alpine regions to warm coastal areas. So, grab your packing list and let's dive into the fashion essentials for a stylish and comfortable adventure in Peru this August!

In Peru, the weather in August can vary depending on the region you are visiting. However, in general, it is winter in Peru during this time, so you can expect cooler temperatures compared to the rest of the year. To stay comfortable and stylish, a long-sleeve shirt and cargo pants would be a great choice.

A long-sleeve shirt is essential for August in Peru as it will provide some extra warmth during the cooler days and nights. Look for a lightweight and breathable fabric like cotton or linen to stay comfortable throughout the day. You can choose a solid color shirt or opt for patterns or prints to add some flair to your outfit.

Cargo pants are perfect for exploring Peru in August as they are versatile and functional. They generally have multiple large pockets, which are great for carrying essentials like your phone, wallet, and travel documents. Cargo pants are also made from durable materials that can withstand different climates and terrains. Look for a pair made from a quick-drying fabric in neutral colors like tan or khaki.

if you lived directly on the equator, would you ever be able to say you were in winter?

If so would it be Northern or Southern?

Anyway the thought of tropical `winter` still makes me chuckle. I think the writer got confused and was thinking about Chile - thats the one at the tip of the Americas.

However, normally, you would not want to be dressed as you would dress for Summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere. Normally, you would want to dress for the cooler weather they expect in Winter. (i.e. Winter clothing.)

That the oceans are warming is a known fact. That warm air rising off oceans goes over land increasing the temperature is simple science.

As oceans keep getting hotter local climates will also get hotter. It's that simple.

And so ends my first Democratic Underground post. Be cool!
