Electricity generation from natural gas-fired power plants is expected to grow 1.3 percent this year, the slowest rate in three years as the nation develops more renewable energy sources and moves away from natural gas.

Non-hydropower renewable energy sources such as wind and solar will grow 15 percent this year, the fastest rate in four years, the Department of Energy reported.

At the same time, generation from coal-fired power plants is predicted to drop by 13 percent this year as 5.8 gigawatts of coal capacity is scheduled to retire. Last year 12.7 gigawatts of coal-fired generation capacity was retired, representing about 5 percent of the nation's total coal-fired capacity. One gigawatt provides enough electricity for about 700000 homes.
