More Fires In Greenland So Far This Year Than In Past Decade Combined

Greenland experienced an unprecedented amount of wildfires this year, which contributed to projections that the country’s ice sheet will experience a record melt this year.

The extreme weather event that caused widespread melting across the Greenland ice sheet last week, sending temperatures soaring above the freezing mark at the highest point on the island, may have ended, but the melt season overall – which has 35 to 40 days to go, is poised to set a new and more significant record.

The fires in Greenland fit a broader pattern that is raising alarms in the climate science community. According to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), the European science organization tracked more than 100 “intense and long-lived wildfires” above the Arctic Circle since June. Calculations show these fires emitted enough carbon dioxide to be the equivalent of Sweden’s total annual emissions.

“This is more than was released by Arctic fires in the same month between 2010 and 2018 combined.” the CAMS statement says.
