However, our ancestors, who lived then, were hunter-gatherers so could move as and when needed. Now, we've built our lives around nice ocean views and easy transport across the oceans and it's going to come and bite us in the ass once the ice sheets melt (even if only partially).

6. I don't get the math

Greenland only looks big on a map. Even if Greenland's ice sheet was 200 feet thick, once that water was added to the ocean, it couldn't possibly raise it 20 feet around the globe.

I think the mistake is in the way they framed it. If warming continues, and it's hot enough to melt Greenland, it's going to melt everything else.

It sounds like they're blaming Greenland, and maybe we should install some refrigerators before it's too late.

The surface area of the world's oceans is 360 million square kilometers. Greenland, 660,200 mi².

I'll do the math later.

12. The math

Area of Greenland: 2.1 million square kilometers
Area of the oceans: 360 million square kilometers
Assuming glaciers average 1 kilometer thick (they are up to 3+ km in places)
2.1 divided by 360 = 0.0058 kilometers = 5.8 meters = yep, about 20 feet.

15. The volume of Greenland's ice sheet is 2,900,000 km3

Total area of oceans in 361,900,000 km2

Volume/Area = 2.9 km3/361.9 km2 = 0.008 km, or 8m

8m converts into 26ft 3in.

Of course, as it inundates coastlines, the area of the ocean increases which may be why they say 20 ft.
