(WIBW) -- The Russian cyber-attack on the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant, in Coffey Co., two years ago also targeted another nuclear facility thats less than an hours drive from Northeast Kansas, according to a new report from the New York Times.
In an article on offensive efforts by the U.S. Cyber Command, the newspaper revealed Friday previously undisclosed reports that the Moscow-backed hackers tried to breach the systems at Nebraska Public Power Districts Cooper Nuclear Station, located along the Missouri River, in Brownsville, Nebraska. The generating station is just over 40 miles north of Hiawatha, via Highways 73 and 67.
In March 2018, the FBI and Dept. of Homeland Security confirmed the Russians were behind the attempted infiltration of Wolf Creek a year earlier. At the time of the attack, the hackers' were described as using techniques that mimic a Russian group known as "Energetic Bear.
The hackers reportedly sent emails containing fake resumes to senior industrial control engineers at Wolf Creek. If the recipient clicked on the document, the attackers could steal their credentials to access other machines on a network. A similar method was used in against the Nebraska facility, the report states, making it into communications networks, but never took over control systems.

(34,111 posts)that I did not know about! Cowboy country or oil country? Seems like we are almost each thing everywhere anymore but it sounds like you are in the Flint Hills area, lucky person!
The Figment
(494 posts)There is a lot to be said about living in Greenwood County, it's crazy quiet, the sound of the Coyote Packs howling at night is very soothing and the amount of wildlife here is amazing.
I never thought that living in Kansas would be such a hoot, I live in what is considered a ghost town,24 residents...22 typically Kansas Conservatives, 2 old Deadhead/Hippies,needless to say they didn't know what to make of us for the first couple of years but even tho our politics are not at all the same these are good honest folk and now that we've been here for 10 years they have warmed up some.
The Flint Hills is a fantastic place...the cost of living is amazing,I never thought I'd be able to buy a house on a 1/2 acre with 100 year old trees,a garden, room for the dogs for less than a 15 year old used car! After living in Boulder Co, Santa Cruz Ca, San Fran and Long Island N.Y. I just laugh at those who pay that cost of living...don't miss it at all.
And then there's the recreational opportunities...the Dirty Kansa, the fishing, Mt.Biking,Motorcycling and sports car roads, driving here is fantastic!
They can keep the Front Range, the East or West Coast if they want...The Flint Hills and Emporia are one of the most affordable and best kept secrets on earth...and Lawrence is Cool too, just a bit spendy for Kansas.

I live just South of Topeka in a little community area that covers about 5 square miles with around 260 people so not big but close to Topeka and Lawrence with KC only about 65 miles away and Manhattan about 60 miles away. I do like Emporia but have not spent a lot of time there, I have quite a few friends around there who are teaching music at Emporia State, we play together in Topeka. I was born in Topeka and have traveled all over this country and a lot of the world. I am content to settle here on my farm very close to where my family homesteaded in the 1800's. My history of free stater ancestors (including friends and companions with John Brown)and members of the first free state governing body keeps me solidly here. Brownback made it miserable for a while but we recover and will begin to build back, already getting a good start.
Nice to know another happy Kansas resident.
