The United Kingdom enjoyed it warmest Easter Monday on record as Britons capitalised on the bank holiday sunshine with activities from lying on the beach to racing with sacks of coal.
The Met Office confirmed that record temperatures had been registered in all four of the UK nations with the mercury reaching 25C (77F) in England and the highest Easter Monday temperatures recorded in Wales and Northern Ireland for 35 years. The sun-drenched weekend had already seen Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland experience their hottest ever Easter Sunday.
900-mile plume of Mediterranean air
The sweltering conditions, caused by a 900-mile plume of hot air sweeping across northern Europe from the Mediterranean, drew hundreds of thousands to the coasts as well as Easter events across the country.
Last year, the annual World Coal Carrying Championships in the West Yorkshire village of Gawthorp were nearly called off due to snow.
