Old coal fired power plants require a lot of maintenance to keep going. New gas units are a lot more efficient plus don't pollute as much.
I use to drive by that plant on a regular basis, easily seen from the Western KY Parkway. Also prominent (in the 80's and 90's and maybe longer) was a huge coal shovel. One of the reasons for the location of the power plant was the presence of a large amount of coal nearby. When I first started driving by the shovel was on the southern side of the Parkway then it moved to the Northern side.
