Nuke majors in decline at universities

There has been a 16 percent drop in enrollment by nuclear energy students at seven universities this year, a Kyodo News survey released Monday said.

Only 223 students enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the universities, which allow freshmen to major in nuclear-related fields.

Last year, there were 264 nuclear energy majors, they said.

"Students may be concerned whether the field of study is promising enough" in light of the nuclear crisis at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, an education ministry official acknowledged.
