Catching the wind: China slows growth of wind-power sector

China's wind-power industry is undergoing major changes. The country's National Energy Administration has said in a statement that to prevent the industry from expanding excessively, it has directed the development and reform commissions of various provinces to review projects strictly. In line with the directive, new construction projects will not be allowed in wind farms if more than 20% of their area is idle, the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily reports.

The national energy regulator told local governments to adopt measures to increase the consumption of wind power to resolve the problem of disused wind farms.

Market observers believe this move to be a result of Premier Wen Jiabao's report during the annual meeting of China's two legislatures in March on curbing the expansion of solar-energy and wind-power industries.

...snip...

Meanwhile, local governments have stepped up the review and approval of wind-power projects and suspended the implementation of projects approved after Sept. 1 last year.
