Americans waste about a pound of food per person each day, with people who have healthier diets rich in fruit and vegetables the most wasteful, research has found.
About 150,000 tons of food is tossed out in US households each day, equivalent to about a third of the daily calories that each American consumes. Fruit and vegetables were the most likely to be thrown out, followed by dairy and then meat.

(102,292 posts)food. I did it by simplifying my diet (and no, I don't eat out much) and pretty much prioritizing important perishable foods to ensure they are finished. So, I don't buy perishables I don't intend to IMMEDIATELY eat.
Making yourself eat up leftovers, when you are craving something else is hard, but I just picture how I'd deal with having only a few dollars a day to eat on-as so much of our country does, and act accordingly.
No self-sanctimony here... just practicalities.

Another disgrace is how much water is wasted by leaving faucets running. And some people's 20 min showers.
