Venices canals have run dry following weeks without rain

The unusual weather has left the city’s iconic gondolas stranded in mud as water levels drop to a reported record low of 70cm.

Images show boats stuck high and dry near the Rialto Bridge with cold weather, low tides and little rain blamed for water levels which are 60cm lower than normal. Low tides have caused chaos on the city’s waterways as traffic struggles to move, with striking images revealing gondolas languishing on the bottom of muddy canals creating a surreal atmosphere in the city.

Venice has run dry before, in 2015 and 2016, despite regular and heavy flooding several times a year, making this the third year in recent years the city has suffered from low water levels.
