New York targets USD-6bn of in-state offshore wind expenditure

New York expects its ambitious plan to install 2,400 MW of offshore wind power capacity by 2030 to bring over USD 6 billion (EUR 4.85bn) in public and private sector expenditure to the industry, creating up to 5,000 jobs.

Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday issued the New York State Offshore Wind Master Plan that outlines the path for the state towards reaching its 2030 installation target. The initiative is seen to be instrumental in achieving a goal of producing 50% of the state’s electricity from renewables by 2030 and lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the state by 40% by the same year.

"While the federal government continues to turn its back on protecting natural resources and plots to open up our coastline to drilling, New York is doubling down on our commitment to renewable energy and the industries of tomorrow," Governor Cuomo said.

As a first step, as announced earlier this month, the state will issue two solicitations in 2018 and 2019 to develop at least 800 MW of offshore wind projects. In line with the solicitations, NYSERDA has filed an offshore wind policy options paper with the New York State Public Service Commission containing a range of procurement options. Among them are different types of long-term fixed contracts, bundled or split power purchase agreements (PPAs), offshore renewable energy credits and utility-owned generation, allowing a utility to buy and own offshore wind farms after construction has been completed by developers.

Thirty years after it's built it will be nothing more than a navigation hazard.

The offshore industrial park, even if it's built, will run at best 30%-35% capacity utilization, making it the equivalent of a power plant that could be contained in a single building.

It's a crime against all future generations.

New Study Finds Offshore Wind May Be Haven for Sea Life

A forthcoming study looks set to add to a growing body of evidence suggesting offshore wind farms have a long-term beneficial impact on sea life.

The study, submitted for publication in the aquatic sciences journal Hydrobiologia, concludes offshore wind farm (OWF) turbine foundations in the North Sea could improve biodiversity by providing new homes for the blue oyster, a key marine ecosystem builder.

“The construction of all currently planned, consented and under-construction OWFs, in addition to those already in operation, is likely to increase the overall abundance of blue mussels in the southern North Sea by more than 10 percent,” according to the paper.

“The blue mussel bioengineers its surrounding environment through shell litter fall, water filtration and clarification, [and] concentration of nutrients, ultimately increasing the species diversity and landscape heterogeneity as a result of structural and functional effects," the paper states.

In fact if we cared about life on this planet we would recognize that spending 2 trillion dollars every 10 years on rickety temporary crap like wind turbines requiring redundant gas plants Is a very, very bad idea.

In May of 2018 we will be well above 410 ppm CO2 and all the continuing cheering about more money being squandered on this stuff will do nothing to arrest that undeniable fact.
