nobody's talking about this... Drilling Arctic Refuge in Tax Bill

Section 2001 directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish and administer all aspects of a competitive oil and gas program in the non-wilderness portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge...Section 20001 further requires the Secretary to conduct at least two area-wide lease sales within the 10-year budget window – the first lease sale within four years of the Act’s enactment and the second lease sale within seven years of enactment. Each lease sale must contain not fewer than 400,000 acres and be comprised of those areas that have the highest hydrocarbon potential. The legislation directs the Secretary to issue any necessary rights-of-way or easements across the Coastal Plain for the exploration, development, production, or transportation associated with the oil and gas program. Additionally, the section authorizes the development of up to 2,000 surface acres of federal land on the Coastal Plain.

The EXXON Valdez was nothing compared to what could happen with drilling in the Arctic region.

motivations for Trump's cozying up to Putin is the possibility of drilling for oil in the Arctic, which both the US and Russia border. I don't know why I think this. I don't know whether it is true. It is no more than a hunch for me.

But watch this story.

Russia desperately wants to get the price of oil to increase. The single largest factor keeping that from happening is the significant (and increasing) production coming from the US.

The prospect of US production growing further (and for more years) could only place more downward pressure on the price of oil (definitely not in Russia's best interest).

Not just oil and gas, but other arctic resources as well.

If you look at the geography, about half the arctic is Northern European / Canadian and the other half is Russian / U.S.A..

As functioning social democracies the Northern European / Canadian faction will develop these resources in ways that benefit their general population. The Russia / U.S.A. faction will develop these resources in ways that benefit their plutocrats,

Collusion in prices and production in the current environment would mean the U.S. restraining our production. I can't see how opening ANWR fits into the discussion. They would instead be discussing regulations on fracking.

If Hillary had won, environmentalists would be heard in D.C.

And the demand for fossil fuels would decline.

Hillary did not nearly advocate for the environment strongly enough for me, but she sure was better than the Donald and Putin any day.

The sooner we move toward alternative energy the less value Putin's oil has. The price will decline for his oil if we use alternative energy.

That is my point.

My area of Southern California has had NO RAIN, none in over 6 months, probably closer to 7 or 8 months. Think of that. NO RAIN.

Global warming.

Tax Reform Bill Would Give Back Alaskans Control of Their Energy Future

Oil produced in the refuge could relieve potential technological challenges that the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System faces if the current supply becomes too low.

The area is not a designated wilderness area and is without sunlight for 15 percent of the year. The Department of Interior highlights that the refuge’s Section 1002 has no trees, deep-water lakes, or mountain peaks. The entire refuge gets fewer than 1,000 visitors per year.

And it is a boom for freedom! This is the emssage they are hearing.

A Note for our Readers:
Trust in the mainstream media is at a historic low—and rightfully so given the behavior of many journalists in Washington, D.C.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected president, it is painfully clear that the mainstream media covers liberals glowingly and conservatives critically.

Now journalists spread false, negative rumors about President Trump before any evidence is even produced.

More at the Daily Signal.

I won't link there so you will have to type in the address if you want to read more rubbish.

petition: https://www.addup.org/campaigns/tell-congress-to-protect-the-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge

No place is more worthy of protection than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In the summer of 2015, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to this unique place, and I discovered there a kind of comfort, tranquility, and peace I’ve experienced in few other places. Of course, Americans have always loved our open lands. Our spirit as a people is as vast as our wild places. The Arctic refuge is the epitome of that spirit—rugged, unapologetic, and indescribably vast.
Unbelievably, this Congress is advancing a plan that would destroy the wild character of the Arctic refuge. The tax bill currently before Congress includes a provision that would open the refuge’s coastal plain to oil and gas exploration and drilling. Drilling in the refuge would feed our fossil fuel addiction and could lead to contaminated waters, reduced wildlife, and oil spills that would destroy the Arctic tundra. Putting oil wells in such a place is appalling and un-American. That’s why I’m fighting to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

There’s no time to lose, because the truth is that we’re already losing the Arctic. Climate disruption is happening there five times faster than anywhere else in the world. We simply can’t afford speeding up this destruction with more oil and gas drilling. Make no mistake: This is a contest of values. The Arctic represents the ideal of wilderness and the American spirit. Saying “no” to drilling is a way of saying “yes” to preserving some places wild and free.
It’s also a matter of human rights. The Gwich’in, an Alaska Native group, depend on the caribou herds that roam throughout the refuge. For the Gwich’in, the coastal plain is sacred land. If we permit the destruction of this land, it would mark a victory for corporate greed and political corruption. That’s the antithesis of why I serve in the U.S. military—to protect and defend our land and our people.

https://www.sierraclub.org/press-releases/2017/12/murkowski-republican-leadership-wrong-arctic-drilling

“One of the only ways they could make this horrible bill worse, and even more unpopular, is by adding in a plan to drill in the Arctic Refuge.Murkowski and Republican Leadership have it wrong here. Drilling is not what the American people want. Drilling is not what the Gwich’in Nation deserves. Drilling is not what the future should hold for one of our country’s last great wild places. Congress must vote down this rigged tax scheme.”
