McCrory Chief Of Staff Refuses To Answer Coal-Ash Questions Under Oath

Gov. Pat McCrory’s chief of staff would not answer several questions under oath during a deposition that might have shed light on the governor’s possible role in the state’s handling of Duke Energy’s coal ash pollution.

And Thomas Stith would not say that state toxicologist Ken Rudo committed perjury, after accusing him during a press conference in August of lying under oath.

As a result, a group of conservation organizations represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center asked a Wake County Superior Court judge on Tuesday to compel Stith to provide testimony. The deposition, taken last month, came as part of a lawsuit brought by several conservation groups seeking the cleanup of coal ash from Duke Energy power plant sites statewide.

EDIT

In it, many questions that have been on the minds of such people as Amy Brown, a Belmont resident near Duke Energy’s Allen power plant and its coal ash pit, went unanswered by Stith:

Have you ever talked to Duke about coal ash — anyone associated with Duke Energy?

Have you met with anyone at Duke Energy about coal ash?

Did you attend a dinner in June 2015 at the Governor’s Mansion with Duke Energy?

Have you ever emailed with Duke Energy concerning coal ash?

Do you know whether at the meeting in June of 2015 at the Governor’s mansion between the Governor and Duke Energy, whether coal ash was discussed?

Were you involved in sending homeowners near coal ash ponds information about their drinking water?

To your knowledge, has the governor met with anyone from Duke Energy about coal ash?
