Unions must be paid dues while 'fair share' case plays out, judge rules

A downstate judge ruled Friday that Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration must give dues paid by nonmembers to unions while a legal challenge on the issue plays out.
Rauner had issued an executive order seeking to block the so-called "fair share" fees, but unions sued to overturn the edict. They asked a judge to free up the money pending the outcome of the case, which Associate Judge Christopher Kolker of St. Clair County Circuit Court granted Friday.
"We continue to believe that the governor's executive order is meant to weaken the right of state employees to have effective union representation," Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan said in a statement. "We're pleased that all fair share agreements will now be honored while our legal challenge is pending."
A spokesman for Rauner said the move was part of an agreement the administration struck with unions to give them access to the money in exchange for an expedited timeline to move the case along.
