GOP attempt to block union election rules fails
The business community lost its fight Tuesday to thwart labors ability to hold elections after nearly a third of a companys employees request union representation.
Senate Republicans failed to get enough votes to overturn a National Labor Relations Board ruling that cut the time needed to hold union elections.
Business backers contend the new rules would permit ambush elections, giving companies little time to argue their views before the votes are cast.
By speeding up union elections and removing important safeguards that ensure a fair election process, this unnecessary rule will restrict job creators free speech rights and limit workers opportunities to hear both sides of the argument to unionize an issue critically important to their livelihood, said Republican Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri.
Also supporting their party's effort to overturn the rule were Republican Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran of Kansas.
