SIOUX CITY | The Sioux City school district could be looking at hiring more than 100 new employees, mostly teachers, for next year due to retirements, enrollment increases and the infusion of a $4.3 million state grant to place more teachers in leadership roles.
Its not something that we think is impossible, Superintendent Paul Gausman said. Its not something that we frankly are overly concerned about. Its part of the work were hired to do, and well get it done.
In a given year, the school district might have to fill anywhere from 25 to 100 vacant jobs, not necessarily all teachers, due to retirements, Gausman said. As of Friday, the district had received 20 official retirement notices from employees, nine of whom are teachers.
The biggest bloc of new teacher hiring will come under the teacher leadership and compensation grant, awarded to 39 districts, including Sioux City, on Monday. The district will receive about $310 per student annually to implement a program that encourages current teachers to take on more influential roles and become mentors for less experienced teachers.
