Labor leaders, civil rights activists and others on Monday unveiled a statue outside Newark Penn Station of A. Philip Randolph, a pioneer who organized the Pullman Porters’ union and, four decades later, headed the historic 1963 March on Washington.

Monday was the 135th anniversary of Randolph’s birth, in Crescent City, Florida, in 1889.

A few steps from the life-sized bronze statue just outside the downtown commuter rail station’s western entrance, Mayor Ras J. Baraka joined other admirers in pulling the wraps off a street sign renaming a section of Raymond Plaza West as A. Philip Randolph Plaza.

Because of Randolph, Baraka said, “labor is integrated the way it should be.”
