New Jobs

Was reading Andrew Sullivan today, and he touched on the demise of the 9 to 5 workday. Reading it reminded me of this take I read a little while ago concerning "the Emerging Artisan Economy" (or more simply put, the move towards more self-employed people, and fewer corporate suits)...

It got me thinking that the changing nature of jobs (fewer 9-5s, more self-employed folks, and manufacturing jobs being basically gone - unless the government steps in to support them) is so often ignored. We, as political animals, are obsessed with the quantity of jobs and too often skip the qualitative part. What sort of jobs do we want etc.?

All of which makes me think that the changing nature of available professions will have a wide-ranging impact on prevailing political attitudes and even cultural definitions of success. Or maybe I'm just being optimistic!
