Starbucks says it wants to ink first union contracts next year

Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) said on Friday that it wants to resume stalled contract talks in January with stores represented by Starbucks Workers United.

It's been more than two years since Starbucks baristas first sought to unionize, during which more than 350 of Starbucks' 9,265 U.S. stores have sought representation with Workers United, including dozens in the Puget Sound area. So far, no stores have reached a labor agreement with the Seattle coffee giant.

During that period, Starbucks has had three CEOs, including the yearlong return of former leader Howard Schultz, who was called to testify before Congress regarding the company's alleged union-busting tactics, including a failure to bargain with unionized stores.

"We collectively agree, the current impasse should not be acceptable to either of us," Chief Partner Officer Sara Kelly said in the Dec. 8 letter to Workers United. "It has not helped Starbucks, Workers United or, most importantly, our partners. In this spirit, we are asking for your support and agreement to restart bargaining."
