Man killed in forklift accident

http://www.omaha.com/article/20121025/NEWS/121029555#man-killed-in-forklift-accident

A 52-year-old man died Wednesday when the forklift he was operating rolled over at the Martin Marietta limestone quarry near Weeping Water, Neb.

Cass County Sheriff William Brueggemann said Darold D. Abbott Jr. of rural Ashland, Neb., was pronounced dead at the scene about 10:15 a.m.

Brueggemann said the forklift was carrying an empty trash container downhill toward the entrance to the mine at 2651 Nebraska Highway 50 when it went out of control. The trash container fell off and the forklift continued downhill, struck a concrete base supporting a conveyor belt and rolled, pinning Abbott.

Forklifts are incredibly dangerous pieces of equipment. Operated properly they are generally safe, but it only takes a split second for all that to change. Even the small ones in most cases out weigh an automobile.
