Dell, HP, Microsoft, Intel oppose proposed tariffs on laptops, tablets
(Reuters) - Dell Technologies Inc, HP Inc, Microsoft Corp and Intel Corp on Wednesday opposed U.S. President Donald Trumps proposal to include laptop computers and tablets among the Chinese goods targeted for tariffs.
Dell, HP and Microsoft, which together account for 52% of the notebooks and detachable tablets sold in the United States, said the proposed tariffs would increase the cost of laptops in the country.
The move would hurt consumers and the industry, and would not address the Chinese trade practices that the Trump administrations office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) seeks to remedy, the four companies said in a joint statement posted online.
Implementing the proposed tariffs would increase U.S. prices for laptops and tablets by at least 19%, or around $120 for the average retail price of a laptop, the companies said, citing a recent study by the Consumer Technology Association.
A price increase of that magnitude may even put laptop devices entirely out of reach for our most cost-conscious consumers, the companies said, noting that the price hikes would occur during peak holiday and back-to-school seasons.

(10,185 posts)When a country allows corporations to outsource to foreign shores almost ALL their manufacturing jobs it's not a good time for tariffs. AND when a country still allows those corporations to make huge, huge profits off of selling their foreign made products in the country that lost the jobs, it's not a good time for tariffs.
Corporations aren't flexible enough to bring back the jobs in a few months or even a few years. Once a producer is forced out of the market by cheap imports, there is little chance they will come back in a year or two. The time to put on tariffs was when the jobs were being sucked out. It's too late now. Unless the tariffs stay on for years and years, and we start subsidizing American Made products, those manufacturing jobs are gone, gone, gone. So with tariffs, those product prices will go up, up, up.
Maybe someone should have thought this through before we gave tax subsidies to corporations for moving their manufacturing jobs overseas.
Or maybe just don't shut the stable door after the horse has bolted.
