USDA secretary wants separate immigration program for agricultural workers

ARLINGTON, Va. (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said on Thursday the government wants a separate immigration program for agricultural workers.

Speaking on the first day of the annual USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum, he said agriculture is caught in the crossfire of the immigration debate. “The people who come to America to work on farms and ranches are not taking jobs from Americans,” Perdue said. “They are not the ones putting a burden on criminal justice system or welfare system.”

I was wondering just how long it would take this group to figure out that there might be a problem with their immigration stance.

The Bracero Program, from the Spanish term bracero, meaning "manual laborer" or "one who works using his arms" was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated on August 4, 1942, when the United States signed the Mexican Farm Labor Agreement with Mexico. The agreement guaranteed decent living conditions (sanitation, adequate shelter and food) and a minimum wage of 30 cents an hour; it also allowed the importation of contract laborers from Guam as a temporary measure during the early phases of World War II.[1] The agreement was extended with the Migrant Labor Agreement of 1951, enacted as an amendment to the Agricultural Act of 1949 (Public Law 78) by Congress,[2] which set the official parameters for the bracero program until its termination in 1964.[3]

I'm an organic small farmer. I have to compete with Wal-Mart, McDonalds and other retailers for workers. I offer more than minimum wage in order to get those workers.

Why do corporate farms think they should be able to hire at half the going rate? Bunch of scoundrels.

..... If you toss out all the farm workers one tomato would cost $ five bucks. And farmers won't be none too happy to see their produce rotting in the fields.

These Rethug brainiacs meat-heads can't think too far ahead it makes their heads hurt.
