UPS is planning to invest nearly $310 million to expand a large ground shipping facility in southern Louisville, adding 300 new full- and part-time jobs within the next two years.
A big jump in e-commerce and retail package deliveries led UPS to unveil the expansion Thursday after state officials preliminarily approved $1.75 million in tax incentives for the project., Gov. Steve Beshear and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer hailed the investment as a coup for Louisville and a significant infusion in the region's economy.
"While the companys air presence in Louisville gets considerable attention," Beshear said, the project "underscores the important and pivotal role ground operations also play in package delivery.
The company intends to add more than 580,000 square feet to the Centennial ground hub at 8100 Air Commerce Drive, off Outer Loop, about 2 miles south of its Worldport facility. The project will roughly double the facility's sorting capacity and modernize the current hub with automated sorting equipment, including new conveyors, six-sided address-label decoding tunnels and label applicators, UPS spokesman Jeff Wafford said.
