Monday, October 7, 2013BY ROBERT REICH
An old friend who has been active in politics for more than thirty years tells me hes giving up. I cant stomach whats going on in Washington anymore, he says. The hell with all of them. I have better things to do with my life.
My friend is falling exactly into the trap that the extreme right wants all of us to fall into such disgust and cynicism that we all give up on politics. Then theyre free to take over everything.
Republicans blame the shutdown of Washington and possible default on the nations debt on the Presidents unwillingness to negotiate over the Affordable Care Act. But that law has already been negotiated. It passed both houses of Congress and was signed into law by the President. It withstood a Supreme Court challenge.

I've been active with Unions, Health and Safety committees since the 70s.
Retired now, fought different gov't institutions for over 40 years.
I'm tired.
Our Harper, and his predecessor Martin are our BushGang.
Found my haven in the bush in Northern Ontario,
will concentrate on enjoying my last few (if I'm lucky) decades.
I think there's gonna be a spell, where the right wingers run amok,
and us olefarts give up to enjoy some of the time we have left.
BUT
I do believe there will be an uprising - not the young of today,
but THEIR young when they realize how stupid and selfish their governing bodies have become.
We (those of my generation) will not be remembered fondly - deservedly so.
We sat back and let it happen.
(sigh)

(4,987 posts)Actually I am liking this gov't shutdown. Traffic on I-5 in Seattle area is so much better. I drove from Arlington to Seattle in record time yesterday. And nothing has stopped working in my daily life. Post office, banks, water & electric utilities, police, fire dept, etc are all working!
I am sure if the shutdown goes beyond 2 weeks, there will be some repercussions, but no problem so far.

At the moment I am furious at the Repukes, and pretty aggravated at the Dems, who seem to be incapable of figuring out how to deal with the psychopaths on the other side. The fact is our own party is run by DINO's and weaklings who are pissing away an enormous popular advantage
