John Stumpf, top executive at Wells Fargo & Co., took the reins as the nations highest paid banking official after receiving $22.9 million in total compensation in 2012.
The bank reported in a regulatory filing Thursday that Stumpf, its chairman, chief executive and president, did not get a raise in salary at $2.8 million.
However, he received $4 million in nonequity incentive-plan compensation, up $900,000 from fiscal 2011.
The total compensation package for Stumpf in the company's summary compensation table was up 20 percent compared with fiscal 2011.
The Securities and Exchange Commission requires corporations to declare all potential executive compensation even if it is long term, such as pensions and deferred compensation.
Stumpf received restricted stock that the company valued at $12.5 million on the date that the award was granted, which was up about $500,000 from 2011. He also received $15,000 in all other compensation, which was a company 401(k) contribution.
