I wouldn't trust anyone that is solely or primarily in that business. If they can't get a loan from a credit union, then maybe the person's credit is so shot that a bankruptcy attorney might be the next alternative.

Anybody that makes a consolidation loan to a person with lousy credit does so for the usurious interest rates they can charge.

Also check if there is a State agency that offers counciling, and or will lead to a NP that offers said same. They do exist.

This is the place experienced financial advisors recommend. You can find a local accredited agency through them, or, in some cases, they will help via a phone call. I believe in person is always better.

I bought the book-Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. It had a plan, letters, everything I needed. I followed the baby steps, got on a budget and within a few months will be debt free. Boy did I learn a lot. I don't agree with his politics but then again money isn't red or blue but green. I listened to his radio program to stay on track. It worked for me. Once you make up your mind to get out of debt, make a plan and stick with it. I had a really deep hole and just had a teaspoon for a shovel, but I have done it.

We are saving to get a house. I would like to pay for it in cash if possible, but we have come such a long way and are much smarter with our money now.
