(39,324 posts)"Nicolas, I won't leave you an open path, mate. You are going to have to defeat me with votes," the telegenic 40-year-old Miranda state governor said in a news conference.
After weeks of rumors about the president's health, Maduro went on national television last Tuesday to announce the death of Chavez, telling that nation that the firebrand leftist had lost his two-year battle with cancer at that age of 58.
"Nicolas lied to this country," Capriles said, adding that the former vice president had been buying time during Chavez's illness to prepare the election.
"Who knows when president Chavez died?"
----
The government says it will embalm the body for posterity to be viewed "like Lenin" in a glass casket, a decision denounced by the opposition, which says Chavez wanted to be buried.
"Now on top of it all, you are using the body of the president to stage a political campaign," Capriles said, accusing the late leader's aides of being "sickened by power".

(160,627 posts)They wore themselves out last year telling us how "telegenic" Peña Nieto is.
That apparently is supposed to touch people so deeply they'll rush to vote for him and restore the pieces of filth who still idolize the creator of El Caracazo massacre of the poor.

(94 posts)In a petulant fit of pique on Friday afternoon, Capriles appeared live on Spanish language CNN and was given 8 minutes to deliver his rant against the fact that Nicholas Maduro was sworn in as acting president of Venezuela. He objected to the fact that the Supreme Court issued an opinion approving Maduro's installation as "President encargo" while Venezuela was in official mourning for Chavez, as if that fact should have precluded the Supreme Court's efforts to assure the orderly continuity of government. It was an absurd complaint by a very, very immature prospective candidate.
Capriles, in an obvious rage, also told Venezuelans that they should stay away from the funeral, despite the fact that millions of Venezuelan citizens had already taken to the streets to accompany President Chavez's body from the hospital to the military academy where he lays in state. Millions more will wait in line to view his body this coming week. (Capriles demand that people stay home was quickly edited out of CNN coverage of Capriles's speech, evidence that even the right wing CNN thought his statement about staying home was embarrassing.
President Hugo Chavez Frias is beloved by the Venezuelan people because they accurately perceived that Chavez truly loved the people and had committed his life and all his energies to improving their lives.
See http://links.org.au/node/3246 for graphs of the substantial economic accomplishments of the Chavez administration since he took office in 1999.

(160,627 posts)I had no idea this happened.
I sure hope people will keep that video to replay now and later. It would be amazing to see such a loss of control again and again.
He certainly showed how feeble his understanding is of the real people of Venezuela. Astonishing.
Thank you for your link containing the Center for Economic and Policy Research graphs. They are excellent. Meant to be used.
We are lucky to get this important link.

(90,061 posts)Someone like Chavez leaves a big hole, it takes a while for things to sort out. I expect there will be some surprises, some new players too, trying to step into the vacuum in one way or another. And Maduro, I doubt even he knows what he is going to do. It's his to lose, but he will have to step up.

(2,035 posts)All he's doing is remind his followers about Chávez. He knows that's the only way they won't lose support. They must constantly remind them about their leader, or else they'll actually notice that things won't be the same without him.
