Some 120 people were killed in Caracas, Venezuela, during carnival. At least, 78 dead bodies were taken to the morgue of Caracas during such period, according to police sources.

One of the victims was identified as Juan Basilio López (45), who died on Tuesday after he was heavily beaten and set in fire. His relatives informed that the man resisted robbery at his store and was heavily beaten.

Relatives of the victims appeared at the National Coordination of Forensic Sciences in Caracas to withdraw the bodies.

But yes, I won't buy any kind of information about Venezuela coming from El Universal. It's not a credible source, especially when it comes to Venezuela.

What do they mean by "violent deaths"? I imagine it's not only "murders"... Are they adding other kind of non-natural deaths to this number, like road accidents, for example?

You couldn't tell, because the artice doesn't explain.

... is that the news per se doesn't tell anything. Take a look at this:

http://www.eluniversal.com/resultado.shtml?cx=000299334537543304768%3Aajd-bshwhpo&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-15&q=morgue&sa.x=0&sa.y=0

El Universal keeps informing the readers about the amount of corpses arriving in the morgues weekly: "100 corpses arrive in city X morgue this week". But they don't tell us how many of these are corpses of people who died of natural causes, diseases, suicides, accidents, killings. They put evertything together to present under a sensationalist and biased title.

..."according to unofficial sources". Why don't they use official sources? I'm pretty sure Venezuela has them.

I can't help more than that. The government stopped releasing statistics themselves and is likely the most corrupt government in the hemisphere who consistently lie to their own people.
