SANTIAGO On Sunday, Minister for Social Development Joaquin Lavin presented the results of a survey entitled Experiences and Perceptions About Discrimination, part of the National Youth Survey.
The survey, which sampled more than 8000 people in 15 areas in Chile, consulted young people between the ages of 15 and 29, asking them which people they would not want to have as friends or neighbors.
The results showed that 44 percent of respondents discriminate or exclude people on the basis of sexual orientation, ethnicity, social class, physical appearance, and whether they are disabled.
The highest levels of discrimination were found to be directed towards gypsies, the mentally disabled, and homosexuals. Significant levels of discrimination were also found towards Peruvians, Bolivians, the Mapuche, and the physically disabled.
