Fake Hugo Chavez Photo Published In El Pais Appears To Show Mexican Patient

MEXICO CITY -- A doctor says the man in a photograph published by the Spanish newspaper El Pais that supposedly showed an ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is really a patient in Mexico.

Dr. Juan Mandujano Guajardo says he was one of the anesthesiologists intubating the man during a 2008 surgery at a Mexico City hospital that was recorded for educational purposes.

The poor-quality image showed the head of a man apparently on a hospital bed with tubes in his mouth. The Spanish newspaper apologized to its readers for the mistake and said it was investigating how the photo made its way into the paper

Mandujano says the video of the patient with a disorder called acromegaly, or gigantism, was uploaded to a medical association website and eventually made its way to YouTube.

"The publication provoked an immediate reaction from the Venezuelan government through the Minister of Information, Ernesto Villegas who said it was as ” grotesque as it is false” to have published this. A government communique pointed out that the photo had been circulating – and denied – since early January.

Responding to the publication the Venezuelan Embassy in Spain said: “After an editorial 2002, where El Pais justified the coup against President Chávez, little from this newspaper has surprised us. But this action exceeds all limits, not only lacking journalistic ethics but also the most basic respect for the rights of a man who is struggling for his health, for his family and to the people Venezuelan”.

It added: “The publication of this is further evidence …that this newspaper is providing a platform for the dissemination of propaganda and a dirty war against President Chávez “

El Pais should've done its homework though.
