Related: About this forumGreat interview: Temple University Professor Joan Mellen & OUR MAN IN HAITI
Heard this live yesterday, and I thought that many here would love to hear it.
The questions are rather uninformed, but she covers a wide spectrum of topics of interest to Latin America and Caribbean aficionados. Quite a bit on the CIA's involvement.

12/17/12 - Mondays Topical Currents is with Temple University Professor Joan Mellen, whose latest book is OUR MAN IN HAITI: George de Mohrenschildt & the CIA in the Nightmare Republic. It tracks the role of the U.S. military and CIA in the internal life of Haiti, particularly during the despotic reign of Francois (Papa Doc) Duvalier. Mellen cites ties to the U-S Mafia, drug traffic, and even the Kennedy assassination.

(6,837 posts)paraphrasing: What is needed in Haiti for the country to become self-sufficient?
answer: Get the UN and US out of Haiti.
They should pull out ASAP. No doubt Haiti will become the envy of the hemisphere.

(24,010 posts)...and dismiss this brilliant woman in typical, short "hit piece" fashion (above).
So, defy them and listen! Get informed by someone who has done the research, knows her subject backwards and forwards and has extremely important things to tell us about our own government.
The interview starts with Joan Mellen's comments on Oswald because of the George de Mohrenschildt/CIA connection to Haiti. Mellen's remarks about the CIA grooming their patsy Oswald to take the wrap for killing JFK is well-documented in James Douglass' "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters"--the best book, by far, on the Kennedy assassination.
Mellen's interview is mostly about the totally rotten history of the U.S. in Haiti--and also about the ubiquitous CIA penetration of our society--businesses, the military and other powerful entities--and pervasive interference around the world.

(6,837 posts)and the solution she offers for Haiti's prosperity. Have the UN, US, and I assume other international entities to leave Haiti. I don't disagree at all. I wouldn't be too optimistic but its worth trying since nothing else has seemed to work.
