'Ghost' Brazil city locks down despite president Jair Bolsonaro

A BRAZILIAN city has become a ‘ghost town’ as it began the first major virus lockdown in the nation.

Some 1.5million residents of Sao Luis — the capital of Maranhao state — and three neighbouring cities can only leave their homes for a handful of reasons, including buying groceries and medicine, and cannot go out to exercise.

Schools, public transport, parks and most businesses have been shut.

State health secretary Carlos Eduardo Lula said Sao Luis looked like a ‘ghost town’ as police manned roadblocks to check only those completing essential tasks were outside.
