By Lucas Rocha, in the magazine Fórum - President Jair Bolsonaro's excesses in the face of the outbreak of the new coronavirus in Brazil irritated the Armed Forces' high command, which seems to have “elected” the Chief Minister of the Civil House, Walter Braga Netto, as the new “Operational president” of the country.

According to the Argentine investigative journalist Horacio Verbitsky, a high official of the Brazilian army communicated an Argentine correlate that President Jair Bolsonaro is not being heard by the authorities when making decisions.

"There was a telephone communication from a high chief of the Brazilian army with one from Argentina, in which the Brazilian informed that they had taken the decision to circumvent President Bolsonaro in all important decisions," said the communicator in the program "Habrá Consecuencias" , from Radio El Destape .

Verbitsky affirms that Bolsonaro acts as a “monarch without effective power” and who now commands the country is General Walter Braga Netto, of the Casa Civil.

They might be better off.

Things have reached such a pitch here in our country I would breath a sigh of relief to hear the Joint Chiefs had thrown a coup and soldiers occupied the White House.

I never thought I'd be wishing for a military coup in the United States, but I don't see anything else that would work at this point. The republicans won't let congress do what's necessary.

Does Brazil already have a new “acting President”?

It is being reported that, under pressure from the Army, Walter Braga Netto is now the “operational president” of Brazil, with Jair Bolsonaro effectively stripped of his decision making powers. According to veteran Argentine investigative journalist Horacio Verbitsky, this has already been communicated informally to the Argentine authorities. There has been as yet no official confirmation.

Bolsonaro chooses general to head new coronavirus committee
Minister Braga Netto will be responsible for articulating government action and advising the president on developments in the pandemic

BRASÍLIA - President Jair Bolsonaro created a committee for the supervision and monitoring of the crisis caused by the pandemic in the coronavirus in the country, according to a decree published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette on Monday, 16. He chose the chief minister of the Civil House , General Walter Braga Netto , installed in February, to coordinate the group.

With a stint in East Timor, as a UN military observer, and coordinating security for the Rio Olympics, Braga Netto was chief of the Army's General Staff until the beginning of February. The general became minister to, according to Bolsonaro said on the day of his inauguration, "strengthen the relationship" with Congress . He replaced Onyx Lorenzoni , who was sent to the Ministry of Citizenship in place of Osmar Terra .

The way Bolsonaro is dealing with the coronavirus epidemic has generated criticism. On Sunday, the president ignored the recommendations of his doctors, to remain in isolation after having had contact with at least 13 people who tested positive for covid-19 , and the Ministry of Health, to avoid crowds, and spent more than an hour greeting at least 272 supporters who gathered in front of the Planalto Palace.

The coronavirus committee will have a total of 22 members. There will be 17 ministers, in addition to the presidents of Caixa, Banco do Brasil, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). There will also be a vacancy for the coordination of the Public Health Emergency Operations Center.

The committee will be responsible for coordinating government action and advising President Bolsonaro on the consequences of the pandemic. Until this second, there are 234 confirmed cases of infection by the virus.

The collegiate body must act in a coordinated manner with another, the Interministerial Executive Group on Public Health Emergency of National and International Importance, created by decree on January 30 and coordinated by the Minister of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta.

State Representative Janaina Paschoal (PSL) said through Twitter, this Thursday (2/4), that if the president continues to 'make fun' of the situation of the coronavirus crisis, the Armed Forces may remove him from office . The deputy referred to a post this morning by the Chief Executive on social media.

“If you do not stop these posts, the military will go to the street to remove you, based on article 142 of the Federal Constitution. My people suffering and you making fun. For God's sake, mature! "Wrote the deputy.

In the publication in question, Bolsonaro posted an excerpt from a video of a supporter who spoke to him outside the Palácio da Alvorada. In the footage, the woman identified herself as a private school teacher. Crying, he said he was going through difficulties, asked Bolsonaro to reopen the shops and put the 'army on the streets'.

“Professor in a moving statement to the President of the Republic. I WANT TO SHARE ”, he wrote on social media. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health have adopted horizontal isolation guidelines. Bolsonaro, however, has been reinforcing the position of attack on the restriction measures followed by governors.
