Brazil: Lula apologizes to China for Eduardo Bolsonaro's offense

Brasilia, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva apologized to Chinese President Xi Jinping for the statements made by Brazilian lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, who accused China of covering up the spreading of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus.

'That offensive and frivolous attitude frontally contradicts the sentiments of respect and admiration of the Brazilian people for China,' Lula said in a letter to Xi. He expressed the sentiment of a nation 'that I had the responsibility to preside for two terms when apologizing to the people and Government of China for the lawmaker's deplorable behavior'.

Lula noted that top legislative authorities and other Brazilian politicians condemned the offense by the parliamentarian, who is President Jair Bolsonaro's son, but the Government has remained silent and has made no explanation about the issue.

'Its silence brings shame to Brazil and confirms the narrowness of a vision of the world that despises truth, science, coexistence among the peoples and democracy itself,' Lula stressed.
