Anger as truck driver destroys Easter Island statue

A Chilean man has been arrested after a truck he was driving crashed into one of Easter Island's iconic statues.

Photos posted by the Ma'u Henua community, which looks after the figures known locally as "moai", show the destruction of the sacred monument.

"We reiterate the importance of taking care of the heritage we have in our park," read the post. "Because they are not only archaeological remains, they are sacred elements for a living culture and fundamental in our Rapa Nui worldview."

It has led to the local mayor calling for better protection of the famed statues.
