Argentina 'launches campaign to undermine Falklands referendum'

The Argentine government has reportedly launched a diplomatic offensive to undermine the legitimacy of a forthcoming referendum in the Falklands on the sovereignty of the disputed islands.

Buenos Aires has ramped up its bid to claim the archipelago during the tenure of left-wing president Cristina Kirchner, who has tapped into a deep national sense of historical injury over the long-running dispute

In recent days, the country’s foreign ministry has launched an action plan to thwart the success of a March referendum to be held by the islanders, Argentine and regional media reported.

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman summoned Argentina’s ambassador in London, Alicia Castro, to Buenos Aires to devise an “anti-referendum” campaign in Britain, according to daily La Nación.

This is effectively formalizing what has been an informal campaign. President Cristina Kirchner is doing whatever she can to convince people to look elsewhere than at the meltdown of the Argentine economy and looming default.
