The Ministry of Health records that in Brazil, a woman survives a physical assault by a man every four minutes. Last year, there were over 145,000 cases of violence - physical, sexual, psychological, and other - in which the victims survived.
The number does not include murdered women, as they are not subject to the same type of notification. According to the Institute of Applied Economic Research, in 2017 there were 4,396 murders of women in the country.
The conclusion comes from unpublished data from the Information System for Notification of Disorders, obtained by Folha via the Law on Access to Information. The report analyzed 1.4 million notifications received from 2014 to 2018.
Every time a woman seeks a health service, and the agent identifies that she has been a victim of violence, she is required to report the case to the health secretariat (the same goes for sexual violence, regardless of gender, and violence against children and the elderly, among other cases).
