02-14-19.-Venezuelans have become the largest immigrant colony in Chile, with 288,233 people, equivalent to 23% of the total, according to an official report presented Thursday in Santiago, reported the AFP agency.

Up to the end of 2018, 1,251,225 foreigners settled in Chile, according to the report "Estimation of foreigners living in Chile" that for the first time presented the National Institute of Statistics (INE) based on data from the Civil Police and the Department of Immigration.

"This work is very important for the country because it makes it possible to make the migrant population in Chile visible through official figures, know who they are, how many they are, where they are and, in that way, build public policies that are required for the country" , said Rodrigo Ubilla, deputy interior minister, during the presentation of the report.

The Venezuelans displaced the second place to the Peruvians, who for decades formed the largest colony of foreigners in the country, with 223,923 people, 18% of the total.

"The situation in Venezuela, which is experiencing a crisis, political, economic and social, led many Venezuelans to make the decision to emigrate to our country," explained Ubilla.

In third place are the Haitian residents (179,338), who also arrived in Chile, escaping from the critical economic situation in their country. It is followed by Colombians (146,582) and Bolivians, with 107,347 people.

"Nonsense!" says Nick Maduro. "No Venezuelans are emigrating. Everyone wants to come to the Utopian workers paradise of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela! 21st Century Socialism provides everything! Universal medical care! Abundant food! Top notch education! And an infrastructure that the US wishes it had!"
