CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) The fledgling head of Venezuelas opposition-controlled congress was pulled from his car and briefly detained Sunday.
Video circulating on social media show an SUV being intercepted on a highway in which Juan Guaido was purportedly traveling to an anti-government rally.
While it was not possible to identify Guaido in the video, his wife and Guaidos own Twitter account said that he had been detained.
Later a member of his party speaking on the condition of anonymity out of fear for their safety said he had been released.
Guaido has been leading an increasingly tense standoff with President Nicolas Maduro seeking to oust the socialist from power. At a rally Friday he said he is prepared to take over as interim president, a move the U.S. and regional governments support.

You would think after all the mass murders and atrocities of the US backed opposition leader in Chile, the US would have learned its lesson. You would think they would Not try it again. You would think that but you would be wrong.
Guaido was briefly detained...how horrible. Our police do worse things to innocent civilians.

(2,412 posts)Our balaclava masked police are caught on camera threatening politicians, slamming their legs in doors of car and threatening them with "disappearing" if they don't leave the country?
Are you an actual Democratic Party supporter, let alone a US citizen? From what I have read in your opinions, I am perhaps thinking that RussiaToday or Sputnik forums might be more your thing? Those forums are filled with trolls who hate America, Europe and love all things Marx, Trotsky and Putin.

The brief detention of leader of the National Assembly made headlines on Sunday, and came two days after the man had vowed to assume the presidency and called for an uprising, an armed coup and an international mandate for him to replace the incumbent Maduro.
A statement reading: We inform the world and the country that today, Jan. 13, a SEBIN commando detained the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly and we do not know where he is, earlier appeared on Guaidós Twitter account.
But Communications Minister Rodriguez told RT Spanish over the phone that there was actually no detention. Several security service employees acted on their own and carried out an unlawful act at the Caracas highway.

Leave it to RT to spin this like Juan Guaidó paid for this to be done...
I am shocked that poor Juan Guaidó didn't commit suicide by jumping out of the door of the vehicle while it was going at a high rate of speed while the SEBIN agents were "momentarily distracted", the way that opposition politician Fernando Albán jumped out of the open 10th floor window of the SEBIN building in Caracas to his unfortunate suicide?
