Cuba, Venezuela have least freedom on internet "Digital Authoritarianism"

Freedom House Report: Cuba is the nation with the least free website on the continent
Freedom House conducts research and promotes democracy, political freedom and human rights around the world

MIAMI, United States.- Cuba and Venezuela once again lead the list of the least free nations in the Americas, according to Freedom House's annual report, Libertad en el 2018: the rise of digital authoritarianism , which was disseminated this Thursday, November 1. According to the report, the Cuban regime took the first place to the least free nation in the continent, while the government of Nicolás Maduro has been designated as one of the ones that has done the most to limit the freedom of its citizens in recent years.

Freedom House accused Maduro of blocking sites that are critical to him, as well as turning his country into one of those that has most restricted Internet freedom. Likewise, the text indicates that the determination of the Venezuelan dictator to remain in power has unleashed an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, causing in recent years a massive exodus of Venezuelans to neighboring countries, with alarming figures. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 2.3 million Venezuelans have left their country since 2014.

The text of Freedom House also refers to the new law that sanctions up to 20 years in prison the critical opinions expressed in social networks, which the Venezuelan regime now considers as "hate messages".

Likewise, the report assures that almost half of the 26 countries that suffered a setback this year were caused by non-transparent electoral processes, as is the case of Venezuela.
