Colombia's main opposition movement banned from next year's local elections

by Adriaan Alsema August 28, 2018

Colombia’s electoral authority banned the movement of Gustavo Petro, the presidential runner-up who obtained 42% of the votes, from next year’s local elections.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) ruled that Petro’s political movement failed the requirements to be recognized as a political party, according to media.

The decision is a major blow for the provocative social democrat who is now without the state grants given to parties to finance their organizations.

The CNE, to which Petro possibly also is banned, is appointed by the political parties and notoriously arbitrary.
