CARACAS: Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez named Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro as his new vice-president in the first change of his cabinet after Sunday's re-election.

Maduro replaces Elias Jaua, who will run for the state governorship of Miranda against opposition leader and defeated presidential candidate Henrique Capriles in December gubernatorial elections.

Venezuela's Chavez names Nicolas Maduro as vice-president

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has named a new vice-president, following his re-election on Sunday for another six-year term.

Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro, one of the president's closest advisors, has been appointed for the job.

He is a former bus driver who rose through the ranks of Mr Chavez' United Socialist Party.

He would replace the president should his battle with cancer force him to step down in the future.

Chavez: U.S. authorities detain Venezuelan foreign minister at airport

(Caracas, Venezuela-AP) September 23, 2006 - Venezuela's president says his foreign minister was accused of participating in terrorist acts and detained by US authorities at a New York airport for more than an hour Saturday.

Hugo Chavez tells Venezuela's state TV that US officials alleged that Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro had links to a failed coup that Chavez led in Venezuela in 1992. But according to Chavez, Maduro didn't even participate in what Chavez calls "that patriotic rebellion."

Maduro told CNN Espanol shortly after being released that he was confined to a small room and told to remove his clothes. He said even when he explained who he was and showed his diplomatic passport, he was threatened, pushed and yelled at by immigration and police officials.

However, a UN diplomat says that Maduro's passage was delayed at JFK Airport because he arrived late without a ticket.

The diplomat says under US government regulations, anyone who shows up late and buys a ticket in cash has to be put through secondary screening at the airport.

The diplomat says as a result, Maduro missed his flight.

(Since when did a U.N. diplomat speak for airport officials, anyway? That "U.N. diplomat" had to be George W. Bush's man at the U.N., John Bolton, the super colossal a-hole, the patron of the Plato swingers club in New York.)
