The Inca empire included the mountain-top citadel of Machu Picchu
Researchers in Peru believe they have traced the origins of the Incas -- the largest pre-Hispanic civilization in the Americas -- through the DNA of the modern-day descendants of their emperors.
From their ancient capital Cusco, the Incas controlled a vast empire called Tahuantinsuyo, which extended from the west of present-day Argentina to the south of Colombia.
They ruled for more than two hundred years before being conquered by the invading Spanish in the 16th century.
The empire included the mountain-top citadel of Machu Picchu in modern-day Peru -- now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction.

(160,542 posts)I remember reading a couple of years ago that the ruling class enforced a system of insuring every citizen got adequate food daily with a very sophisticated, effective system.
Along the roads formed in the mountains used daily by travelers, they positioned stations containing food continually so the people travelling from place to place in the mountains had a way to sustain themselves while traveling long distances.
I was so surprised at that level of concern for the common good from such a groups far removed from the struggle for survival. It was stunning to discover.
Thanks for you for suggesting the "Great Courses" series on "Lost Worlds of South America." It couldn't help but be fascinating.

A Groundbreaking New DNA Study May Have Finally Determined Where Inca Emperors Originated
The mystery of the origin of the Incas may finally be solved as scientists have conducted major DNA research on the descendants of Inca emperors.
Peruvian scientists believe that they may have finally at long last discovered where the Incas originated from thanks to a major new study conducted on the DNA of descendants of great Inca emperors.
The pre-Hispanic Tahuantinsuyo empire that the Incas created, which includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu, can be counted as one of the largest that ever existed in the Americas, with emperors controlling their vast number of people from the capital of Cusco, as Phys.org report.
The Incas once had a thriving empire that was in existence for over 200 years and which only ended after the arrival of Spanish conquerors during the 16th century.
It is down to the huge amount of interest and enthusiasm that scientists Jose Sandoval and Ricardo Fujita have for the ancient Inca civilization that the two men decided to try and discover what the genetic makeup of the Incas might be. Fujita and Sandoval were also intent on discovering whether two legends on the origin of the Incas were correct.
