Venezuela crisis: Zoo animals stolen and eaten amid food shortages

Zoo animals in Venezuela are being stolen and eaten as the country sinks further into a food shortage crisis, local police have said.

The Zulia Metropolitan Zoological Park in the city of Maracaibo reported that more than ten species of animals had gone missing from the facility in recent weeks.

Officers said they “presumed” the buffalo, tapirs and collared peccaries - small pig-like mammals - had been stolen for food.

Leonard Nunez, the head of the zoo, said he believed the animals had been stolen by drug dealers who later sold them on the black market. “They take everything here,” he told local reporters.

Really, this is hilarious. I presume all the dozens of animals stolen from US zoos every year are also "eaten" and not sold in the black market, right.

Saying people are stealing animals from zoo due to hunger, without a single evidence? Satanization campaign at its finest. Almost as good as saying North Korea killed a top-officer with anti-aircraft weapons and the guy appearing alive and live on the TV the following week ahahahahha.

Mocking the disappearance of animals for whatever reason is no cause for humor. I strongly suggest you remove your comments. There are many, MANY animal friends on DU.

That people aren't starving? That the average Venezuelan hasn't lost 19 pounds in the last year, because parents are skipping meals so that their children can eat? That mothers cannot breast feed their children due to malnutrition, and these children cannot get formula... at any price? That mothers aren't feeding their babies "rice water"?

That food is plentiful, and people aren't eating feral animals, stealing farm (and zoo) animals for nutriment? That farmers are not planting, because armed gangs are stealing their produce before they can even harvest it? That nobody is planting anything any longer, because the seeds cost more to plant than what Chavismo promises farmers for their produce?

Chavismo is an EPIC failure. Maduro is making Castro look like an Nobel winning economist.

They're no better than Trump when it comes to any news that talks badly about him, except they think the same for any news that talk badly about the performance of the Venezuelan government, or any leftist government, for that matter.
