Venezuelan copter attacker vows to fight on; lawmakers beaten

By Diego Oré and Silene Ramírez | CARACAS

The Venezuelan police officer who staged a helicopter attack on government buildings in Caracas last week appeared in an internet video on Wednesday vowing to continue fighting for the "liberation" of his country.

And in another chaotic day for Venezuela, convulsed by protests since April, pro-government groups burst into the opposition-controlled National Assembly, witnesses said, beating up several lawmakers and journalists.

Opponents of President Nicolas Maduro are demanding general elections to end socialist rule and solutions to the OPEC nation's brutal economic crisis. The government says the opposition is seeking a violent coup with U.S. support.

"Once again we are in Caracas, ready and willing to continue our struggle for the liberation of our country," police pilot Oscar Perez said in a video, wearing a military uniform and wool cap, with a Venezuelan flag and a rifle behind him.

"In Spain, after the failed Coup d’etat of February 23rd, 1981, the Chamber of Deputies made a conscious decision not to repair the bullet-holes the golpistas had made on the chamber’s ceiling as they burst into shooting into the air in a bid to destroy democracy.

Those holes stand there, even today, as a silent reminder to any Spanish politician who cares to look up just how fragile democracy is, how it is always one violent attack away from destruction.

I learned that today, reading José Ramón Morales Arilla’s Facebook TL Like he says, we need these tokens of the past to be preserved, because we know we’re prone to forgetting, and forgetting can be deadly.

And he’s right. Which is why the blood stains from this morning’s cowardly attack on the National Assembly should be preserved. Right now. Forever.

Future generations of leaders who walk into that place long after this nightmare is over cannot be allowed to forget what the fight for democracy has meant to this generation."

These "mobs" were invited to the National Assembly by the Chavistas (Maduro, et alli). They were "allowed" into the chambers... by the Chavista security that prevents ordinary citizens from getting within blocks of the CNE or Miraflores.
