El Salvador on Alert Due to Possible Seismic Swarm
San Salvador, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale closed a telluric day in El Salvador, shaken 275 times by a seismic swarm that killed one person, it was reported today.
The municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán was the epicenter of the earthquakes that disturbed the Salvadorans, who were also worried due to unfounded rumors of supposed tectonic plate movements or the awakening of San Salvador volcano.
The authorities of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources had to, in front of the cameras, ask the population to remain calm and to trust the information coming only from official and scientific channels.
Minister Lina Pohl said that the earthquakes are the result of the usual movement in the faults located south of this capital, and recalled that swarms like this have shaken San Salvador 18 times since 1986.
Pohl admitted that these phenomena can last for several more days, and the ones that occurred between yesterday and today resound more because they are very shallow, between three and five kilometers.
Justice and Security Minister Mauricio Ramírez announced the closure of the stretch of road in Los Chorros, where a man died when a mountain rock crushed the car he was traveling in.
At the same time, the technicians measured the temperature levels in the vents of San Salvador volcano and corroborated that it remains in the usual parameters, although the monitoring of the volcano persists, whose last eruption was exactly 100 years ago.
Experts ruled out that this seismic swarm indicates the imminence of an earthquake, although the authorities insist on remaining calm and following the guidelines to avoid human and material damages, if possible.
