Women's Rights Groups Present Proposals to Chavez for Government Plan

Women's rights groups presented a series of proposals to Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday evening in a televised event at the Teresa Carreño theatre in Caracas. The groups are hoping that the proposals, which are related to specific issues affecting Venezuela's female population, will be incorporated into the Chavez administration's governmental plan for 2013-2019.

“We have been carrying out debates throughout the national territory, and we consider this program and its strategic framework to be vital for the deepening and continuity of this emancipatory project, which is essentially the construction of Bolivarian socialism,” said Melissa Orellana, representative and spokesperson for the country's rural and peasant women's groups.

The list of proposals handed over to the president include; the free distribution of contraceptives for men and women, education in state schools to increase awareness surrounding gender equality, the creation of communal council based refuges for women who are victims of domestic violence, an increase in communal projects to care for children and the “socialization” of domestic labour to allow women to participate fully in political activities. The women also demanded more state regulation over the usage of women's bodies as “merchandise” in the media.

Many of the women's groups, who consider themselves to be socialist-feminist, have said that true social change and progress in the arena of gender equality will only be possible with the re-election of Hugo Chavez in October.

it has meant gradual but major shift towards social liberalism and gender equality of traditionally patriarchal and catholic Latin American 'macho' culture.

The bonds between women of character and the administration have been strong for years.

Dishonest, underhanded treatment of women has been the province of the parasitic elite forever.

Interestingly, this presentation of their proposals comes just shortly after the Capriles’ campaign team branded a public meeting with Venezuela women as a ‘panty-thon’. Capriles’ also recently caused controversy in Carabobo State interrupting a speech with ‘I'm impressed with how beautiful the women are’, ‘At times, you stop here and you have some girls in front and you start to look at them and you lose your concentration.’ I don't think the strong women who've been pioneering and implementing social programs under Chavez's leadership are going to be too swayed by brainless banter.

Someone should help him realize no one gives a flying yoohoo if he goes all gooey looking at people in the audience.

Most people are more respectful toward the potential voters than that, or at least they pretend to be.

He must imagine he's a "rock star" rather than a man hoping to win an incredibly complex and demanding job.

Panty-thon. How elegant.

Sorry I missed this. I know ...... how degrading, heh? It's pretty hard to take anyone seriously who equates women with their underwear during a crucial election campaign. Either he's really stupid, or just another right-wing sexist pig.
